What is new in Grade 6

Grade 6 is the last year of the Intermediate Phase, and it is where the work starts to look like high school maths. Five ideas arrive that were not there before: percentages, ratio and rate, exponents, negative numbers and angles.

Percentages are the ones that show up most in real life — a discount, interest, a test mark — and also the ones where a learner most easily skips a step. A 15% discount on R2 400 needs two calculations, not one: first how much the discount is, then how much you pay. Many learners get the first step right and write that down as the answer.

Negative numbers feel strange until they are tied to a thermometer. As soon as a learner sees that −8 °C rising by 5 degrees lands on −3 °C and not −13, the number line falls into place.

Built from real primary school exam papers

We analysed more than 100 real Grade 4 to Grade 7 maths papers — November papers, term tests and official ANA question papers — and pulled out each paper's topic list and mark allocation.

Those past papers showed us where we fell short. A Grade 4 test paper examined symmetry and position, and we did not have it — so we wrote it in. The same went for angles in Grade 5, order of operations in Grade 6, and VAT and hire purchase in Grade 7. That is why these primary school tests cover what schools actually ask.
